Comparison and Maintenance Essentials of Overlock Machine Feed Dog Materials

2025 11/03

The material of the overlock machine’s feed dog directly affects the stability of fabric feeding and the longevity of the equipment. Currently, the mainstream materials include high-carbon steel, stainless steel, and ceramic-coated types. High-carbon steel feed dogs feature high hardness and excellent wear resistance, making them ideal for heavy fabrics such as thick denim, though rust prevention must be carefully managed. Stainless steel feed dogs offer superior corrosion resistance and are well-suited for long-term, high-frequency use, though their hardness is slightly lower than that of high-carbon steel. Ceramic-coated feed dogs combine lightweight characteristics with low friction, effectively reducing fabric scratches when sewing thin materials, but they come at a higher cost.
In daily maintenance, it is important to regularly clean lint and thread residues accumulated in the feed grooves. Use a soft brush with a neutral detergent to wipe the surface and prevent metal parts from oxidizing. For height adjustment, it is recommended to set the feed dog lift according to the fabric thickness: 0.8–1.2 mm for thin fabrics and above 1.5 mm for thick fabrics. If the feed dog teeth become worn or show horizontal scratches, they should be replaced promptly to prevent fabric deviation or skipped stitches. At the same time, check the alignment and fit between the feed shaft and the timing belt to ensure smooth operation.
