Guide to Tension Adjustment for Denim Sewing Machine Seams

2025 08/18

In denim seam processing, tension adjustment directly affects stitch smoothness and product durability. Proper tension prevents stitches from becoming too loose or too tight, thus avoiding fabric puckering or thread breakage. During operation, first adjust the sewing machine’s tension knob according to the thickness of the denim. For standard fabrics, the recommended upper thread tension is 3–4 newtons, while the lower thread tension should be slightly lower at 2–3 newtons to maintain balance. When testing, use fabric swatches to sew and observe whether the stitches are even; if skipped stitches occur, gradually fine-tune the knob in 0.5-newton increments. Industry practice emphasizes that combining a double-needle mechanism designed for denim sewing can enhance tension stability. At the same time, referring to the preset values in the equipment manual (such as shuttle hook specifications for heavy-duty denim sewing machines) can optimize efficiency. Once properly set, the sewing process becomes smoother, laying a solid foundation for subsequent steps such as back-pocket stitching.
